Hostos Community College
Eugenio María de Hostos Community College of The City University of New York which is simply known as Hostos Community College was established for the huge local population of the Hispanics in South Bronx. It comes under the City University of New York system. The Board of Education passed an act after which the college was established in 1968. It was amongst the very first bilingual higher education institutions in the United States of America and was named after a Puerto Rican poet, writer Eugenio María de Hostos.
Since almost 80 % of the students are either Puerto Rican or Hispanic, many of the programs that are offered at the college are in Spanish. The students, of course, get to learn English too. They offer degrees in Associate of Arts, Associate In Applied Science and Associate In Science with options like Liberal Arts, Community Health, Accounting for Forensic Accounting, Electrical Engineering Science, Chemical Engineering, Accounting, Mathematics, Mechanical Engineering, Liberal Arts and Sciences, Sciences for Forensic Science, Civil Engineering, Dental Hygiene, Radiologic Technology, Nursing, Office Technology, Gerontology, Teacher Education, Public Interest Paralegal Studies, Digital Design and Animation, Digital Music, Public Administration etc. Many of these programs are available for dual admission as well which means that high school students can take up these courses while they are still in school, studying.
