Southern State Community College
Southern State Community College was established in 1975. It is located in Southern Ohio, and is also known as SSCC. It is a two year community college. Initially, it was named as Southern State General and Technical College, and technical degrees formed its primary focus. It was re named in 1977, as Southern State Community College. The main campus is at Ohio, but it also has four other campuses situated in Adams, Browns, Clinton, Fayette and highland Counties. The academic programs offered include technical degrees and transfer programs. Associate degrees include applied science and applied business. Numerous certificate programs are also offered at the University including subjects like Medical Transcription, Information Processing and Pharmacy Technician. Students can also opt for adult basic literacy courses and a variety of workplace training programs at SSCC. Distance learning is also available at SSCC. The college maintains an open admission policy. Financial assistance is also provided to students and approximately 75 percent of the student population receives some form of financial aid.
Distance learning is especially beneficial for those students, who have to maintain a balance between work family and education. People who can’t make it to classes regularly can enroll themselves as online students and choose from a variety of distance learning courses available at SSCC. These courses are taught over the Internet, WebCT, or the IVT equipment available at the Central, North and South Campus. SSCC is one of the first community colleges in the state to develop an accredited transfer program. Many of the students here get their credits transferred to four year colleges and universities after completing two-years of a bachelor’s degree from the college.
