Also known as MT Medical Transcription is the process that deals with converting voice recorded reports from Doctors into text. This is used by Doctors to keep record of their patients when they are under treatment. Medical Transcription is performed either by the Hospital employees or outsourced to companies that specialize in this profession.
Education in Medical Transcription

MT Training starts with junior college vocational career school or distance learning programs. The Programs range from 1 to 2 years for an associate's degree. Some of the programs are based on externships that offer on the job experience to students under the supervision of a manager. This provides a great opportunity to students for a direct job after their training.
Though it is not necessary for Medical Transcription Programs to gain accreditation some programs are voluntarily accredited by the Approval Committee for Certificate Programs (AACP). Employers do not require transcriptionists to have graduated from an AACP approved programs but a level of certification is still required.
 There are two certifications for Transcriptionists:

  • Registered Medical Transcriptionist designation (RMT): Graduates with less than 2 years of experience can give a test to receive this Certification.
  • Certified Medical Transcriptionist designation (CMT): Transcriptionists with 2 years of experience in acute care working in more than one area of surgery and using different styles of format report and dictation.
